Commercial Intelligence

Your commercial position, properly understood — by everyone who needs it

Commercial Intelligence promotes governed data and a consistent, portfolio-wide view of where the outturn is moving — every period, every package, on every project.

The platform

Commercial Intelligence runs in Outtrn.

Acumine's hosted platform for construction teams.

Outtrn

/ ˈaʊt.tɜːn / noun

The industry term

In construction, the outturn is where a project actually lands at completion — the date it finishes and the cost it finishes at — measured against what was originally forecast.

Every commercial team is managing the distance between today's forecast and their eventual outturn. That gap is where risk lives, and where predictability is most needed.

The problem

The spreadsheet delivered outturn visibility. Until scale made it a liability.

We have assessed commercial workbooks across tier-one contractors. The same pattern shows up in all of them.

What a single project workbook typically holds

Across the assessments we have run

100sWorksheets
10,000sFormulas
1,000sMacro modules
£10,000sLost per project, per year

Days of senior commercial time every cycle, on every project — keeping the file working, and rebuilding the same reports by hand. Priced at what that time actually costs, it runs to tens of thousands a year, before a single number is wrong.

The size is not really the problem. It is what the size makes impossible: a file that large cannot carry the permissions, governance, security and version control a portfolio needs — and the insight that should read the same on every project ends up depending on who built which workbook, and on one person still being there to explain it.

PermissionsFile and worksheet controls cannot match project, package, region and board-level access needs.
Governance and version controlOfficial values move without a recorded baseline — which file is current, what changed and which number went to the board.
SecurityUncontrolled files, email attachments and macros widen the exposure with every copy taken.
Key-person relianceSomeone built it and keeps it working, usually brilliantly. But that knowledge is hard to share and harder to hand over.
Consistent reportingThe commercial picture differs by project and by whoever built it, so portfolio numbers do not compare.
Portfolio analysisProject files hold valuable commercial data that is hard to centralise, validate and analyse together.

The business case

The lost time is the small half.

Time spent maintaining files and rebuilding reports is the part you can count. The part that matters more is what earlier, better commercial information lets the team do.

Packages managed proactivelyA package trending badly, seen while there is still procurement, programme or negotiation left to change it — rather than confirmed at final account.
Change, variations and claimsEntitlement captured while the evidence is still fresh, and a position you can defend upstream or downstream because the records behind it hold up.
Cash managed on better informationEarlier certainty on what is coming in and when, so the business can plan what it commits to next rather than waiting to find out.
Intervention weeks earlierAcross every project at once, not just the ones someone had time to look at closely this cycle.

The arithmetic is straightforward. On a single project, a one-point margin swing or one recovered variation is six figures. Across a book of work it runs into millions. The lost days are what the status quo costs — this is what one better decision is worth.

What Commercial Intelligence does

Governed commercial data, and the view that comes with it.

The same structure on every project, so package, cost, value and forecast records are typed, validated and auditable — and the number on the screen reconciles to the records behind it, not to a reporting pack someone rebuilt.

Working analysis stays flexible; official values are governed, with period locks and full audit history. The same view renders on every project and rolls up across the portfolio, so directors and finance see movement without waiting for a pack to be built.

Also inside: a package subledger with QS feeder-sheet input, upstream and downstream claims, scenario modelling kept separate from approved numbers, a commercial kanban for review actions, trends and movements from portfolio down to assumption level, and package-level permissions.

On every project, every period

HeadlineForecast value & final margin
PackagesPackage-margin performance across the job
RiskLive risk exposure
DeliveryLive S-curves — forecast versus actual

Every figure reconciles to the governed package records behind it — nothing taken on faith.

How this fits the way your team works today is the first thing we would talk through — there is more than one way in.

Who it serves

Built for every commercial stakeholder.

Commercial teams

Keep a spreadsheet-like working style, reduce rework, and have more confidence in the numbers being submitted.

Commercial directors

See regional and portfolio movement earlier, with exception-driven review instead of manual chasing.

Finance leaders

Better traceability, consolidation and period-end governance, without depending on uncontrolled files.

IT and data teams

A controlled application and an integration-ready data model, rather than fragile macro files to support.

Working with Acumine

Built on commercial understanding.

Acumine® works with tier-one contractors to improve the way commercial data is captured, governed, reported and used across projects and portfolios — alongside the hosted platform, or inside your own environment.

CVR process review

Review how cost value reconciliation works across the business — where the process breaks down, what creates inconsistency and what a more governed approach would look like.

Forecasting and outturn governance

Improve the reliability of outturn forecasts by introducing consistent review cadences, governance checkpoints and accountability structures into the commercial reporting process.

Workbook standardisation

Design and roll out standard commercial workbook templates that reduce inconsistency across projects without disrupting the way commercial managers work day to day.

Commercial reporting automation

Reduce manual effort in commercial reporting cycles by connecting governed workbooks and data sources to automated portfolio reporting.

Portfolio commercial visibility

Create the leadership reporting layer that brings commercial position, risk and outturn forecast together across the whole project portfolio in a consistent, timely view.

Commercial data integration

Connect commercial data with programme, project, finance and procurement systems to give leadership a more complete picture of performance and risk across the business.

Programme and Commercial are where we have productised our work. Acumine's wider data practice spans strategy, engineering, quality and portfolio analytics — see the full breadth of what we do, or how we work with tier-one contractors.

How you run it

Hosted and ready to use, or solutions built into your own environment.

Acumine®-hosted

Outtrn
Acumine's
hosted platform

Commercial Intelligence, ready to use in Outtrn.

Governed workbooks, dashboards and forecasting, with nothing to set up or run yourself. When you want it, Programme Intelligence is available in the same platform.

Built into your environment

Prefer to run things inside your own estate?

Acumine® builds solutions into your environment, drawing on the connectors, data models and delivery patterns our experience has proven — so you are not starting from a blank page, and you are live in weeks rather than quarters.

Commercial + Programme

The number moves. The question is what moved it.

Variations, procurement, design change, claims — plenty shifts the commercial position without a date changing at all. But when a date does change, it lands here too: value, cash, margin, and when those come back to the business.

Commercial Intelligence gives you a governed, auditable view of outturn on its own. Add Programme Intelligence in the same platform and you can tell one from the other.

Portfolio

Every project's outturn, consolidated.

  • Revenue forecast and forecast margin, consolidated
  • Risk exposure and cash variance across the portfolio
  • Regional and portfolio movement visible earlier
  • The same consistent numbers, whoever built the project
