Portfolio-Scale IDP Reporting Built on Morta, Microsoft Fabric and Power BI

Background

From one project requirement to a portfolio-wide platform

Tier 1 contractors managing large project portfolios need a consistent, scalable way to track and report on design deliverables across their business. The initial requirement often comes from a major project — but what becomes clear quickly is that the same need exists across the wider portfolio.

With many live projects running simultaneously, each managing its own Information Delivery Plan, the opportunity is to bring those plans together into a single, governed reporting environment — giving design managers, project teams and leadership a consistent and timely view of design delivery performance across the business. Acumine designs and delivers the data platform that makes that possible.

01

Data across multiple systems

Design information is typically held across Morta, document management platforms and other operational systems. Bringing it together into a single reporting environment requires structured integration and data engineering.

02

Portfolio-wide visibility

A clear, timely view of planned versus actual deliverables, overdue submissions and emerging risk — across every live project — is the foundation for effective portfolio-level design management.

03

Scalable reporting

A platform that can serve 10, 50 or 100 live projects without recreating the same logic each time — extending a consistent reporting model as the portfolio grows.

04

Information quality assurance

Automated checks across naming conventions, planned dates, metadata completeness and classification — supporting strong, consistent information governance across the portfolio.

05

Access control at portfolio scale

A single reporting environment serving multiple projects requires robust row-level security — users should only see the projects and data they are authorised to access.

Platform architecture

A medallion lakehouse built for portfolio scale

Rather than building a standalone reporting layer for one project, Acumine designs a broader data platform capable of supporting portfolio-wide reporting and analytics — scalable enough to serve large project portfolios from a single architecture.

Using Microsoft Fabric, Acumine implements a medallion lakehouse architecture — RAW, Bronze and Silver data layers — to structure and manage data as it moves from source systems into reporting. Integration pipelines extract and consolidate data from Morta and other project systems, combining forecast information with actual delivery data to produce clean, reporting-ready datasets.

Because the platform is built with scale in mind, the approach can be extended beyond the initial project. Once the model is established, rolling it out to additional projects does not require recreating the same logic each time — it becomes a repeatable framework for the wider portfolio.

01

RAW layer

Source data ingested directly from Morta and other project systems — untransformed, providing a reliable audit trail and the ability to reprocess data if requirements change.

02

Bronze layer

Structured transformation of raw data — cleaning, validating and shaping source records into a consistent format across projects, disciplines and delivery milestones.

03

Silver layer

Reporting-ready datasets combining forecast and actual delivery data — the foundation for all Power BI reporting outputs at project and portfolio level.

04

Power BI reporting

Interactive reports and dashboards built on the Silver layer — giving design managers, project teams and leadership self-service access to IDP insight with appropriate row-level security.

Reporting outputs

From portfolio overview to project-level detail

Power BI reporting gives users visibility of design delivery and controls information across both individual projects and the wider portfolio — with drill-down from high-level oversight into project and discipline-level detail.

Delivery performance

Planned vs actual deliverables

Interactive views of design submission performance — planned dates versus actual delivery, highlighting overdue submissions and emerging delivery risk at project, discipline and supplier level.

Data quality

Information assurance

Automated surfacing of data quality issues across the portfolio: missing planned dates, non-compliant file naming, incomplete metadata, classification gaps and deliverables not correctly captured in the IDP.

Portfolio insight

Cross-portfolio trends

Portfolio-level dashboards showing status, reporting performance and exceptions across all live projects — enabling leadership to identify patterns and intervene before issues escalate on individual projects.

Supply chain

Supplier and discipline oversight

Visibility of supplier and discipline-level submission trends — highlighting where late, missing or non-compliant deliverables are concentrated, supporting more effective supply chain management.

Information management

IDP, MIDP and TIDP alignment

Reporting outputs aligned to recognised industry practices around IDPs, MIDPs, TIDPs and CDE governance — supporting a more structured approach to information management and reducing risk across the portfolio.

Access control

Row-level security by project and role

A robust security model ensures users can only access the projects and data they are authorised to view — making it safe to operate a single reporting environment across multiple projects and teams at portfolio scale.

How we deliver it

Phased from a single project to portfolio scale

Phase 01

Initial project implementation

Acumine first addresses the reporting and controls needs of the priority project — establishing IDP visibility, design submission tracking and reporting clarity as the foundation for the wider platform.

Phase 02

Data platform design and integration

Building on the first phase, Acumine designs a scalable integration architecture using Microsoft Fabric — with a medallion lakehouse approach to data ingestion, transformation and modelling that can support the full portfolio.

Phase 03

Reporting, assurance and security

Power BI reporting outputs are developed alongside a robust row-level security model — controlling access by user, role and project. Data quality and assurance logic is embedded to help users identify gaps and compliance issues in project information.

Phase 04

Portfolio rollout and optimisation

The solution is extended across the wider portfolio — applying a consistent reporting model to all live projects while continuing to refine outputs based on user feedback and evolving business needs.

Outcomes

A modern data foundation for design intelligence

Scalable reporting across the portfolio

What starts as a response to a single project requirement becomes a scalable reporting platform that grows with the business — giving teams a consistent and repeatable way to monitor design delivery performance across the portfolio.

More time for design management, less for data preparation

Automated integrations and standardised reporting free up teams from manual data preparation — improving reporting timeliness and consistency across projects and giving design managers more time for the work that matters.

Earlier identification of delivery risk

Project teams and leadership gain access to more timely, reliable and actionable information — improving the ability to spot issues early, manage design risk proactively and make better-informed decisions at both project and portfolio level.

Stronger governance and information quality

By surfacing information quality issues across the portfolio — missing dates, incomplete metadata, naming conventions — the platform supports stronger information governance and gives teams greater confidence in the completeness of project data.

Technology

Morta, Microsoft Fabric and Power BI

The platform combines Morta as the source of design deliverable data with a Microsoft Fabric medallion lakehouse for scalable data engineering — creating a structured, governed reporting foundation that serves the full portfolio from a single architecture.
