Turning Drone Capture into Operational Insight with DroneDeploy, Microsoft Fabric and Power BI

Background

More than compliance — a platform for drone intelligence

Tier 1 contractors using DroneDeploy across their project portfolios are generating significant operational data — flight records, capture activity, safety metrics and project engagement. The challenge is turning that data into structured compliance reporting and meaningful operational insight.

The immediate driver is typically straightforward: meeting annual Civil Aviation Authority reporting requirements using DroneDeploy data without time-consuming manual preparation. But beyond compliance, contractors want to understand how drone technology is being used across projects — capture frequency, engagement, plan quality, flight safety and the value generated by the investment. Acumine designs and delivers reporting solutions that address both needs from a single, scalable platform.

01

A dual reporting requirement

The solution needs to satisfy statutory CAA reporting and also give project teams and leadership operational insight into adoption, engagement and capture quality — from the same underlying dataset.

02

Complex API source data

Two separate DroneDeploy API datasets — Data Exchange API and GraphQL flight records — require significant data engineering to transform into a usable reporting model.

03

Portfolio-wide visibility

Reporting needs to work at project, business unit and company level — giving the right view to the right people across a diverse construction portfolio.

04

Flight safety oversight

Contractors need confidence that drone operations are being carried out safely — battery usage, minimum satellite connections and compliance with the 120 metre CAA altitude limit.

The solution

API-led reporting across compliance, safety and operational insight

Acumine designs and delivers DroneDeploy reporting solutions that combine statutory compliance, flight safety oversight and operational insight in a single, scalable platform — built on Microsoft Fabric and Power BI.

Architecture

API-led data integration

The solution uses DroneDeploy's Data Exchange API and GraphQL API to ingest flight and activity data into a Microsoft Fabric medallion lakehouse. Separate RAW and Bronze pipelines feed a Silver reporting layer — creating a structured, scalable foundation for both CAA reporting and broader operational analytics from the same underlying data.

Compliance

Automated CAA reporting

The solution captures and exports the required flight, pilot and aircraft data for the annual CAA submission — including battery percentage at take-off and landing, exact flight times, satellite connections and additional flight log details. A governed, automated process replaces manual preparation and reduces submission risk.

Operations

Drone capture reporting

A separate Drone Capture report gives project users and leadership visibility of how DroneDeploy is being used across the portfolio — number of flights, duration, image coverage, annotations, views, analyses and exports — with business unit and project-level summaries and user adoption views.

Capture quality and safety

Going beyond flight counts

The solution goes further than reporting how many flights happened — it gives the business insight into whether drone activity is safe, effective and generating value.

Capture quality measures include RMSE data as a proxy for plan accuracy, RTK usage, image coverage trends and plan performance data. Engagement measures track annotations by user role and the percentage of maps viewed and acted upon by project teams.

Flight safety reporting surfaces minimum satellite connections with RAG thresholds — below 8, between 8 and 12, and above 12 satellites — alongside altitude warnings to highlight flights approaching or exceeding the 120 metre CAA ceiling. This gives operational managers a more practical way to review risks and support safe drone operations.

Acumine has also worked directly with DroneDeploy to extend their API, incorporating battery data, improved geo-mapping accuracy flags and direct URL links to flight plans within the platform — all of which enhance reporting capability beyond what is available from the standard API.

Access and governance

The right data to the right people

01

Senior management

Full visibility across all contract data, business units and projects — supporting business-wide oversight of drone adoption and operational performance.

02

Business unit users

Restricted to the projects associated with their business unit — giving regional teams the insight they need without exposing data outside their scope.

03

Project users

Access limited to the specific projects for which they are registered — enabling project-level users to engage with the tool safely and appropriately.

Outcomes

Structured compliance and scalable operational insight

Governed, scalable CAA reporting

Contractors gain a robust and repeatable CAA reporting process aligned to their wider IT and data strategy — replacing manual preparation with an automated, governed pipeline that reduces submission effort and risk.

Better visibility of drone operations

The business gains clearer insight into flight activity, capture frequency, image coverage, plan quality and user engagement across projects — helping teams understand how DroneDeploy is being used and where more value can be realised.

Improved safety and compliance oversight

With dedicated visibility of battery usage, satellite connections and altitude warnings, operational managers gain a more effective way to monitor drone activity, support safe operations and meet annual CAA reporting obligations.

A stronger foundation for digital construction

By turning raw drone data into accessible operational insight, contractors establish a better foundation for progress capture, project controls and future digital construction use cases — including AI-powered 3D digital twins.

Technology

Built on DroneDeploy, Microsoft Fabric and Power BI

The solution combines DroneDeploy's API data with a Microsoft Fabric medallion lakehouse architecture — structuring flight and operational data through RAW, Bronze and Silver layers into governed Power BI reporting that scales with the portfolio.
